The SportPesa Legends Cup showcases rugby talent in Africa

9 June 2026

Uganda Legends edged Kenya Legends 16–15 in a closely contested match at Mombasa Sports Club, securing their first-ever SportPesa Legends Cup title and ending Kenya’s long reign as cup winners.

The one-off exhibition match, held on 6 June 2026, continues to build the tournament’s reputation as a key moment in the regional rugby calendar. Since its launch in 2023, the SportPesa Legends Cup has brought together former international players from Kenya and Uganda, celebrating the legacy of the game while strengthening cross-border sporting ties.

The tournament reflects SportPesa’s ambition to use rugby as a platform to engage fans, inspire younger generations, and support the continued growth of the sport across Africa.

A Growing Platform for Regional Rugby

While the Legends Cup honours former players, it is also designed to support and develop the next generation of rugby talent. SportPesa has consistently shown its commitment to growing rugby talent across the continent through investments in grassroots programmes and national teams.

This commitment is reflected in SportPesa investment in Kenyan rugby. Through a partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union, SportPesa has supported the national sevens team, Shujaa, as they compete globally.

Alongside this, backing for the SportPesa National Rugby Sevens Circuit has helped strengthen domestic competitions, supporting operations, marketing, and prize money for men’s and women’s teams while creating pathways for emerging players.

Support for historic clubs and community-level initiatives reinforces the foundations of the sport, ensuring that talent development and opportunities extends beyond elite teams and into local communities.

Extending Investment Across the Continent

In South Africa, SportPesa’s partnership with the DHL Stormers is driving fan engagement through matchday activations and community-focused initiatives.

SportPesa’s national sponsorship of the FNB Varsity Cup is strengthening university-level rugby, by supporting both men’s and women’s competitions and creating clearer pathway from education into professional sport.

These investments reflect SportPesa’s long-term approach to support rugby at every level, while maintaining strong connections with local communities and supporters.

For SportPesa, the objective is to ensure that the game is supported across Africa by creating opportunities for players at all levels and meaningful experiences for fans. The Legends Cup is one of the ways we are bringing this ambition to life.
