Safer Play
Safer play is an important part of the work we do at SportPesa.
We always want our customers to enjoy the experience they have when betting and gaming on our platform. When that experience is no longer enjoyable, it could become a problem.
While 99% of our customers use our platform to place bets on the sports and games they love, we have a duty to our customers who may need extra support. We understand the responsibility we have and the protections we need to put in place for our customers who may bet beyond their means.
We have developed a robust safer gaming policy that all our customers can avail of, should they need it. As part of this policy, we have developed a range of practical supports that our customers can use anytime.
SportPesa Support
We want our customers to always have the best experience on our platform. That’s why we encourage our customers to:
Only place bets with amounts that you can afford to lose
Keep track of the time and amount you spend on betting
If you want to have a break, you can self- exclusion. This allows you to temporarily close your account for a selected period of time.
Sports betting should be entertaining and not seen as a way of making money; avoid chasing losses.
If you think someone may no longer be getting enjoyment
out of betting and gaming, here are the signs to look out for:
1. They are betting more frequently.
2. They are wagering more money.
3. They skip work or college to place bets.
4. They spend all of their finances on betting.
5. They have lost interest in their family, friends or hobbies due to betting.
6. They have asked for a loan to help them ‘win back’ their losses.
Getting help
While SportPesa has supports on its platform to help, there are many organizations that can provide support and assistance to individuals who develop a problem with betting and gaming.
SportPesa Self-Exclusion policy allows you to temporarily close your account for a particular period.
During self-exclusion, you will not be allowed to re-open your account or any new account.
Monitoring Mechanisms will be put in place for any activity related to your account or profile on SportPesa betting platforms. Any new accounts detected will be closed immediately.
Once we receive a Self-Exclusion request, the process of closing the account begins. It mainly involves checking account balances or any pending bets and deactivation of the account; as well as setting alerts for any activity related to the particular account or profile on SportPesa betting platforms.
This process requires reasonable working period to implement. However, we will endeavour to affect your self-exclusion as soon as possible.
Typically, it will take a maximum of 48 hours to implement after you receive an email acknowledging receipt of self-exclusion request on your account from a SportPesa Agent. Once the account closing process is complete, you will receive a confirmation email alerting you of the temporary closure. The self-exclusion period is considered as having commenced when it is communicated to you.
If you have any balance, we will reach out to you to withdraw or get consent that you would want the money to remain in your account.
Any unsettled bets will be settled on the result of the event. If your bet is a win, you can contact our Customer Support team to arrange for the payment of your winnings to be made.
If you can still access any of our SportPesa services after having received communication of activation of your Self-Exclusion period, kindly notify us immediately.
Contact us if you still have access to SportPesa services. Email services.care@ke.sportpesa.com to reach our Kenya team or tz.customercare@sportpesa.com for Tanzania.
Failure to communicate to us, we will not be held liable to you or any third party if you are able to continue to bet via Sportpesa website or SMS or our other platforms after self-exclusion.
We recommend that you seek additional support and advice during the self-exclusion period. Once the period expires, we will automatically re-open your account.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to gamble. SportPesa has strict policies in place to protect minors from gambling and we ask our customers to play their part too.
How to protect minors from betting
- Your details like deposit, password and username should not be shared with minors.
- Your device should never be left unattended when logged in. Avoid using the “Remember My Password” option on your computer.
- Lock your computer with a password so as to limit or deny incidental or accidental access to it.
- Enlighten your kids on the risks and dangers of underage betting.
- Use child protection software.
Measures we have put in place to curb under-age betting:
We have strict measures in place to ensure that every new customer signing up for a SportPesa account is over the age of 18.
Every individual signing up for a new account with SportPesa must tick a box indicating they are 18 years and above. There is a notification that players under 18 are not accepted.
Once an individual has created an account using his/her date of birth, address and name, we use this data to confirm that the person is above 18 years.
We ask all new customers to provide us with their passport or original National ID to withdraw money from any of the Tanzania mobile money service providers is another verification measure.
Our payment services are based on mobile money services. To register for such services, by law, one has to be aged 18 and above and have a valid National ID card. For cheque or cash payments, we require proof of age through the Identity card.
If you feel that you may have a problem with betting, you are not on your own. Contact our support team if you would like to self exclude or if you require any further help.
